1,000 applications, 120 seats: the Lagos Summit 2026

On Saturday 6 June 2026, 120 educators joined us at the Radisson Blu Anchorage Hotel, Victoria Island, for the Lagos Summit, a full day of practical training with Gemini and Google Classroom.

More than 1,000 teachers applied for those 120 places. That kind of demand tells us something important: educators in Nigeria aren’t waiting to be convinced about technology in the classroom. They want the time and support to use it well.

Nearly postponed

Six weeks before the Summit, our founder Lawrence Tijjani was in hospital. The sensible option was to postpone, but he decided against it.

“I believed in the vision too much to let it go,” says Lawrence. “You don’t get 120 teachers in a room on a Saturday by mistake.”

What happened on the day

We didn’t fly out to deliver keynotes. Every session was hands-on, with teachers working directly with the tools they’ll use back at school.

The thread running through the day was time. Lesson planning, marking, admin and communication all take hours away from teaching. The sessions focused on practical ways to win some of that time back.

Thank you

Thank you to Damilola Okonkwo and the KEY academy team, to Mmamotlhabi (Tlailane) François and Google Learning & Education, and to Vernovi Cyber for backing the event.

What came next

The Summit was a starting point.

In September, we ran our first Google Certified Educator bootcamp for teachers and school leaders in Nigeria. This online programme was designed to support participants as they worked towards Level 1 and Level 2 certification. All the educators who complete it will be invited to an in-person Train the Trainer day in Lagos, so the skills keep spreading through their schools.

Looking ahead to 2027

Planning for next year’s Summit is already on our minds, along with further Bootcamp opportunities for those who were unable to attend this month.
